I am new to the industry and want to be a bartender. I worked as a barista before which comes with a lot of transferable skills but Ive got to put in my time so I’m bar backing. In my first month of bar backing with my infinite luck I managed to break my wrist. I slipped in a pair of sketchers and will never trust them again. This isn’t the issue I’m venting about.
I am at home in a cast and did not realize the doctor had cleared me to go back to work in a limited one armed capacity. Which with any common sense in a restaurant severely limits what I can and can’t do. I didn’t know this and I got a call from the Workmen’s Comp. insurance asking for information and them telling me that I was refusing to return to work. I didn’t receive any phone call until yesterday and the accident occurred on the 13th. The only thing I’ve been to are doctors. They called me in the middle of the day yesterday. I didn’t hear it I didn’t know. They also didn’t leave a voicemail.
I immediately called my restaurant after getting off the phone with the insurance. The manager sounded annoyed I called. I told them I want to come back to work I didn’t get a message yesterday. They asked about my availability and said to keep an eye on our scheduling app.
I can’t find another job until I’m out of this cast and I’ll work to whatever ability I’m capable but I feel like I was being streamlined to be fired because of my arm. This is also a place that doesn’t have male bartenders so I can’t work my way up. I’ve just been here for experience.
Not sure if anyone has experience something like this or what I should do next ?
