Post Body

I need to vent. I moved to a new city 9 months ago and got a job bartending at a restaurant soon after. The restaurant has high turnover. The owner hired a bunch of teenagers and very rarely comes around.

90% of the time, thereā€™s no MOD. I work 5 days a week, and the other 2 days, the bartenders completely drop the ball. They do zero prep. I work evenings and usually have to scramble to get everything ready in time before the rush. Iā€™ve been very vocal about the disarray at the bar, but nothing changes.

These kids help themselves to drinks whenever they want. I ask them to step aside or get water from the kitchen while Iā€™m prepping drinks and usually get a sassy answer like, ā€œbut I was getting sprite.ā€

Iā€™ve had to burn the ice because receipts and jalapeƱos are dropped in there. The AM bartenders (typically a host or server, not a dedicated bartender) leave me big messes at the start of my shift. Iā€™m so tired of cleaning up after them.

The majority of my coworkers are white and aged 17-25. They play the most explicit hip hop (Drake, Kanye, 21 Savage, etc) and make fun of customers for complaining about it. I like hip hop, but itā€™s fucking embarrassing to have to face customers while n-bombs are being dropped.

BOH smokes cigarettes while prepping food. Underage coworkers ask me for drinks. Iā€™m getting a lot more vocal and surly with my nos. Ie, Iā€™m not putting my job on the line for you to drink. Not sure if I nipped it in the bud, or theyā€™re too hungover from partying with their fake IDsā€” another fact that theyā€™re not shy about broadcasting in front of customers.

Tonight, a server asked one of my customers if she could eat sushi off her plate. The teenage busser left the bar a mess because he was busy with Snapchat. A couple days ago, everyone fucked off for an hour while we were closing to go hang out with their friend on the patio. Me and a host had to answer to customers wondering wtf happened.

I have to beg for my paystubs and follow up multiple times. My boss crops out my sick time balance. Itā€™s very obvious. By law, I should be accruing it, but have plenty of text receipts of him denying or being unsure about me getting sick timeā€¦in spite of me redeeming sick time at the start of the year.

I plan on reporting this to the department of labor as soon as I find another jobā€¦but thatā€™s the issue. I know a lot of restaurants are over staffed because itā€™s summertime. Iā€™ve been applying pretty relentlessly on Culinary Agents. I even went through 4 rounds of interviews at another restaurant only to not get the job. Iā€™m extremely frustrated and disheartened.

I applied everywhere on culinary agents within a 45 minute drive on Friday. Iā€™ll see what new listings pop up tomorrow. I suppose Iā€™ll try other boards like Craigslist, LinkedIn, and indeed too.

I have the next 2 days off. I plan on going to bars and restaurants in person to ask if anyone is looking to hire a bartender.

This is a silly question, but should I bring paper copies of my resume? Iā€™m super tapped out after paying rent and want to be cautious about spending money until my next payday (Wednesday).

Also, how do I navigate wanting to leave ASAP and ideally not giving notice? Should I tell prospective employers that I need a week or twoā€™s notice, then oh dang, I gave my notice and was ā€œimmediately taken off the scheduleā€? My boss only schedules one week at a time at the end of the week. Schedules are supposed to come out Thursday, but sometimes itā€™s as late as Sunday.

Itā€™s getting to the point where Iā€™m taking my frustration home with me. This past week has been awful. I dread going to work and canā€™t wait to get out of there.

Any advice on how to find a better situation asap?

Tl;dr: I work in a sketchy restaurant and need tips on finding a better job. What do you tell a new employer when you want to leave your current job immediately?
