Why is clawhammer played on an open-back, and three-finger style on a resonator?

I'm relatively new to banjo(started playing a few months ago) and started playing three-finger style but on an open-back banjo. I've been able to learn three-finger style on it just fine(or at least I think so), so I'm curious how it came to be that clawhammer is played on open-back and three-finger style on resonator? Are there any notable musicians who play clawhammer on resonator and vice versa?
