A lot of you have probably noticed how people don't know shit about Bangladesh. I was talking to an Afghan friend, and I told her I'm from Bangladesh. She said "Oh it's in India right?" And I told her we're our own country, and she was like "Oh haha I was always bad at geography".
I'm not offended at my friend since it's not her responsibility to remember all countries. But I wish we made ourselves and our culture more recognizable to the world. To me, our culture is quite distict from India (at least from foreign peoples' perception of Indian culture). I hope we're able to show that to the world one day, and I think that starts with every Bangladeshi, esp the ones living in foreign countries. Don't just forget your culture even if you have no wish of returning. If your friends ever have questions about your home country, be as open as possible. Attend Bangali events in your area if they're available in your country, and invite your foreign friends as well. Be proud of your heritage no matter what.
An Indian friend of mine told me today the only things he knew about Bangladesh was from the movie Extraction. He thought we speak Urdu.
