There is no surprise to anyone that fells point is one of the two most premier party centers in the city. Alongside fed hill we are actually spoiled to have such cool areas for partying that we ourselves don’t overhype.
Fells point has expanded so much just in the last 20 years from referring just to the few blocks waterfront (even if it was defined as larger) to now because a whole quarter of narrow historic streets of residences and bars and restaurants. It’s been such a pleasure to see it develop as such.
I can’t recall if it was Condé Nast or AD or what publication, but they listed fells point as the 7th best nightlight district to visit in the US, alongside French Quarter, Broadway Nashville, Austin music row, ybor city and the stockyards.
I think that fells point with proper city branding could become a tourism meca for the city. The main comparison I can draw is the French quarter. Heighten the maritime feeling, start allowing for easier city codes to allow for sidewalk balconies and rooftops to create more inviting streetscapes. (If you take a look back at old photos often times the flat front townhomes did have covered porches or balconies) Really delve into the history of the area including all the macabre involving Edgar Allan Poe, the ouija and hoodoo etc. it could become the face of Baltimores culture which is rarely expressed.
What are your thoughts on fells and its continued development? How do you see it continuing to evolve as it gains more recognition?
