Hi! My partner and I are the new owners of a lovely 3 ish years old female Ball Python. She is from a family friend who gave her to us as they saw they couldn't give her the best care anymore. However, what we didn't know was it was worse than we thought. She came with all her equipment and enclosure, however, she's quite big but still living in a tiny plastic container enclosure (I believe it's 30 gallon capacity), hasn't ever had proper humidity, has AstroTurf for substrate, no light in her enclosure at all, she has a respiratory infection that we are treating with daily iodine rinse as directed by the vet (and the previous owner said this is the third time in her life she's gotten a respiratory infection) and she looks to be overweight. (She was being fed 100-179g rats every 1-2 weeks even though she weighs 1895g). She has ok heating and ok clutter but that's about it. We are already in the process of getting her a proper enclosure (we are looking into getting a 4x2x2 PVC, but are immediately upgrading her to a 3x1.5x1.5 plastic container/tub that we happened to already have for now), substrate, digital hygrometer and thermometer, light, and a better heating set up. We are trying our best to give her a better life but we are new to this. No, giving her to an experienced BP owner is not an option unfortunately, the previous owner is still quite attached to the snake and visits and only was willing to entrust us with her care. But we are committed to keeping her for the rest of her life and making it the best we can (yup, we are aware they can live a whopping 30 years!)
After reading the welcome post guides which were very helpful (thank you so much for making those!) I still have some questions:
Is she overweight? I have some pictures attached to the post and she weighs 1895g. I looked at the charts but I just can't quite tell.
If she is overweight, how should I go about lowering her feedings to help her lose weight? Do I like gradually lower it or go straight to just one rat once a month or?
For lighting and heating set up, we are still trying to figure out what's best for her and us. Currently she has a CHE, heating pad, and I don't quite remember what the third one is called. It's this big square heating thing attached to the lid inside the enclosure. All three are attached to their own individual thermostats and I have checked the temps on the cold and warm side regularly on those and with a temperature gun and they are in the right ranges. We're wondering what we should switch and what is fine. I saw in the heating document that halogen floods or DHP are recommended as the primary heating source. Is there one that's better? Are any one or more of the three heating things she came with suitable as a secondary to go with halogen or DHP? What are some good brands for dimming thermostats available in Canada?
Do you need to make a mix of substrates or is just one type ok? We got coconut fibre/plantation soil yesterday but we can also get sphagnum moss and various mulches from our local pet store. How big should her water dish be? Can it be just a large plastic one or is there a specific type of material it should be? She currently has a big plastic one. How long is it safe to let a ball python roam or be held outside their enclosure? My room is always 20-23 degrees Celsius and roughly 40% humidity. I currently have had her out twice and she was eager to explore and be held, but I usually put her back in after 20-30 minutes as I worry about her being in a colder, dryer environment for too long. How do we fix her humidity if the moist substrate doesn't get it high enough? I'd greatly appreciate some advice. Thank you all so much in advance! :)
