Never played BG, but about to start. Should I go straight fighter first, to get the feel of the game? I'm tempted to go thief, but not sure if it's a good idea since I'm new!

I have no idea what I am doing, basically! I just want to have fun, think outside the box and do all side quests. My only requirement is that I want to avoid the good alignment... I've played the hero in way too many games.

Bards sound awfully fun too!

EDIT: I would like to use a single character for the whole saga (with a party, though)... not sure how much this might influence your suggestions.

Went with: human fighter, intending to dual thief later on! Let's see if this keeps my interest... otherwise I'll try something different!
