Favorite NPC's to play through game

I am about to start again for the millionth time (BGEE1). I love playing a Paladin. My question is this: Which NPC's do you like having to play through the game? I like Iomen, but which other characters are useful to complete the game. Just seems that some NPC's are a waste of time (other than having them join, taking their equipment, then removing them).
