Is BG3 writing really that silly when compared to BG1?
Post Body

Now I've seen some takes lately on BG3 that it's world is filled with too much marvel-esque writing and it feels like it's just trying to get to the next punchline. So I've decided to compare it to BG1 and really test if it's any sillier than Biowares writing back in the day.

I realize the game isn't fully out yet but I believe we have a big enough sample size from early access to really tell what the writing will be like.

I'll start by listing all the BG1 Silly moments I can remember. Feel free to post any I've missed and I'll add them.

Spoiler Warning for anyone that hasn't beaten BG1 or played early access for BG3

BG1 Silly moments

Golden Pantaloons Certain voice lines directly being silly at the player (looking at you Jaheira) Noober Finding a demons dog Borinole Man Rufus III Xan/Montarron/Tiax etc Melicamp the Chicken Resurrecting a man's dead child for him to act like it's something that happens every Tuesday.

Now there may be others I can't quite think of right now, but you get the point. The side activities in BG1 can be very silly.

The important thing to note is that it takes it's main story VERY seriously as all the things I listed are just side content and I can't think of a single purposely goofy moment in the BG1 main story.

Now onto BG3 early access. Obviously a smaller sample size, but big enough I think to judge what kind of writing we can expect.

BG3 EA Silly Moments

Some of the tiefling children at the camp Walking in on a bugbear and ogre.... copulating... The goblins across the board are fairly silly, but even they have their serious moments BOOOOOOOOAL, the fake lord of murder and his fish cult Redcap sheep in the swamp (although some might find that more creepy)

As you can see, BG3 also has it's silly moments. However it too takes it's main plotline very seriously and in early access at least I never felt like Larian was making a joke at the main stories expense. Much like old Bioware.

So when comparing the two I'm very confused as to why anyone would think that BG3 is just gonna be punchline after punchline as it seems to follow much the same line as BG1, keep your main story serious and your levity on the side. Of course not all the side content in both games is silly as there are many sidequests that have a much more serious tone.

I hope this helps dispel this weird notion that the older BG games writing was somehow not at all silly. Or that BG3 is somehow too silly. Hope you all have a great day!
