Is there a popular choice besides the classic Gilette/Mach 3/5 etc for a good clean head shave? I see novelty gadgets advertised but are they any good ones?

Basically the title. If I'm lazy and my hair grows in a bit, I'll shave it down with clippers a tiny bit to give my razor a break, then do the rest with my Gillette and get a nice clean shave.
I see all these wacky electric razors with three heads and such that are supposedly a bald man's best friend, but I just can't imagine they're really any good? Am I just too old school or a sensible baldy?
I tried a Braun for a while but it took FOREVER and wasn't practical.
