Why is this white’s territory?

I am very new to the game, and I have just played a match that has confused me. Why in the first photo is the highlighted area not counted as black territory with 4 points, or even just the 1 point territory shown on the second photo?
I thought it may be because diagonal connections do not count, but then there is a diagonal connection keeping together the black territory at the bottom center.
Can someone explain why this is the case?
