I’m gonna try to keep this short.
I’m a very clean person and make sure I always clean up any messes I make and THEN some. I try to leave any area I touch better than when I found it, which is problematic and stressful if you live with people who make messes and do not clear thoroughly.
Backstory: I live with 3 people. 1 of my roommates keeps to himself and makes minimal messes and the other 2 roommates basically hoard an insane amount of food in the pantry and fridge (to the point where I’ve said something 3 times about respecting the space in the fridge because I could not go grocery shopping…. I ended up just pushing their stuff to the side so I could neatly stack mine). These 2 roommates cook dinner for about an hour, each, everyday.
I woke up at 230AM because I was thirsty, go to the kitchen, turn the light on- 5 roaches on the counter and in the sink. Not the big ones- the tiny ones. Immediately started panic cleaning and ended up bleaching everything around me and scrubbing incessantly for two hours. I saw the roaches and panicked because I knew there were a lot more hidden somewhere.
I’m cleaning the kitchen and there are food smudges on the backsplash, the counter has protein powder all over it, more roaches scurrying behind my blender, the sink has food sludge all over it, the drying rack has mouse poop on it (how?!)… I just got so frustrated.
Sent a photo of the roaches to the chat and asked if we could ALL be cleaner. Didn’t single anyone out, just told everyone that I ordered roach bait and traps on Amazon and bleached the kitchen. I had to remove everything from the counters to scrub the backsplash and counter. The dishes in the dish rack were half cleaned so I put everything into the dishwasher and ran it before I went to work.
The two roommates texted me outside of the chat and told me that they basically felt like I was personally attacking them. I wasn’t.
I’m trying to be proactive about this, but I feel discouraged that I can’t even bring up a possible infestation without them getting offended. I also kind of want to keep my blender and juicer in my room because they keep leaving both so dirty.
Am I the asshole in this situation? No one likes to hear that they aren’t cleaning well, so I’ve tried to approach the topic carefully. I’ve just been here in this house for 5 years and this is the first time I’ve never seen a roach.
Moving into my own place in a few months (with landlords permission), so part of me doesn’t care anymore. Idk. I just feel like I need to keep reminding adult women to clean.
