In just a couple of days, I am done with this problem, so yay !

In March of last year, I found a new job but it was in another city where I had no real transportation to go to regularly, so I asked friend of mine if I could crash on his couch for a little while. He accepted and in April, told his roommate to leave for May so I could move in. This is where the fun begins.

The day before 1st of may, I hand my roommate my part of the rent. The very next day, I get a visit from the landlord while he’s at work. Apparently, he was 2 months late on the rate, excluding March. At the time, he was ( and still ) conveniently working in a corner store right in front of the apartment. We pay him a visit, he hand the landlord the cash I gave him the night before and hand me his debit card so I could pay some more.

During the whole time I stayed with him, all of this stuff would litter the whole apartment. He was like a hoarder, all of stuff on all the furniture, on the ground on plenty of bookshelves stuffed with action figures, books, minis, knick knacks, toys, paintball and fishing equipment, etc. He was extremely secretive about anything involving money. Not that he was cheap, but if it involved his finances, bills or rent, he’d tell me everything is fine.

From then on, I would pay the rent and he would pay me back half, minus my share of the bills he was supposed to pay. Surprise surprise ! After 2 months of him not paying back, event though I asked him every week, no money in sight. I confront him and he just evades me for the next month. At the end of said month, he tells me one of his friends offered him a well paying job, but he needed a car since it was a little far. So he used the money he owed me to pay the license plate, his driving license, the car insurance, etc …

So I tell him he can pay the rent himself and I’ll pay half because this is bullshit. He agrees. In October, I owe him some money for rent and 4 months of electricity bill, because he never showed me any of the bills. He send me a picture with the amounts and I pay him cash so he can go pay the landlord. Somehow, it begins the excuses of his bank account is frozen and he can’t access the funds atm. To this day, I still have no idea where this money went.

In end of november, I check his papers scattered across the table for the account number so I can pay my part of the bill online. I find out I was paying more than the amount I was supposed to. And again, surprise surprise, the bill wasn’t fully paid. Apparently he didn’t know how to read an electricity bill, but assures me he paid the bill. The very next day, we get our power cut. I confront him, he tells me he doesn’t have the money, so I go pay the 700$ bill so we get our power back. So with the amount I paid too much and this bill, it pays for my december and january share of the rent.

Throughout the year, we would get “your account is now past due” in 1/10 of the internet pages I would visit. Again, “everything is fine” was the motto. Beginning December rolls around and one of those “your account is now past due” shows up and it’s been more than a week without it clearing. After I ask him again “Everything is fine”, but the next day, no internet. I had to pay 400$ internet bill because he was short on the rent. So that would pay my part of the rent for january.

Mid january comes around and I go check the bills myself at the landlord, at the internet company and the city for electricity … 1600$ in back rent. 450$ in electricity and 500$ in internet bills.

I confront him and he tells me he lost 2 of his 3 jobs including the “well paying job” but he’s working a lot of extra hours at the corner store so everything will be fine.

During this whole ordeal, he got a girlfriend. Of course, he would tell her fuck all if it involved finances. They wanted to move out and leave me the apartment. The idea was I would get my own lease and none of his dept would transfer to me. They finally found some place they could afford and on the 2 of march, plenty of friends helped him move out. One of the problem was : He packed nothing, zero, nada. So they moved only his and her furniture.

The thing is : he still didn’t come do any cleaning. So I took most of his shit and packed it, storing it all in the living room so I could clean the apartment. 2 weeks of intense cleaning while working 40h/week didn’t leave me any time for gaming or leisure of any sort. I could have left all his shit just laying where it sat, but I was so tired of living in filth.

The week after, there is a note sandwiched between the 2 back doors “Mister X owe 1980$ to landlord, come see us right now” So I go see him at work and show him the paper, telling me he’s going to check if the landlord was there on Monday to settle things. I go see the landlord office and indeed, he wasn’t there, but my ex roommate had an appointment with the landlord on Monday. So I show up on Monday with ex roommate. They get him in one of the offices while I wait. Eventually, they ask me to get into another office. They show me papers saying ex roommate wants to break his lease and ask me if I want to get a lease with them, assuring me I would have no fee and anything related to ex roommate would not carry to me.

I read sign the papers carefully and by the end of the week, I had my lease for the 1st of april. When I went to get my lease, I paid my first month there and then. I don’t like to have bills hanging.

Last week, he came by with some friends to get half the shit I packed for him. I told him if he doesn’t get all of his stuff bu the 1st of April, I’m tossing everything of his left in the garbage. There’s 2 rooms I still can’t clean ( 3th bedroom and living room ) cuz all of his shit is still there, not counting that I have to inspect all the rooms so the landlord can come inspect/repair the apartment.

I’m so done with his shit. Btw, I did tell his gf about all this stuff and she tells me “that’s just how he is” so … that’s out of my hands at this point.
