I live in an apartment where a mother and daughter live in a 3 bedroom apartment. The mother and daughter share one room, I am in one room, and there is another roommate in another room. The mother told me that her daughter is an adult and going to school. She locks her in the room like a prisoner at all times.

Then I noticed something. I barely ever see the daughter. I have never seen her go out of the house or to the living room by herself. I have never seen her cook or clean. She is usually in her room and her mother locks her inside the room at all times. Her mother goes to work and comes home around 2. I assume that the daughter is there all day because I don't see her coming home. When the mother is at work, I would hear the daughter throwing a tantrum or make strange noises. Sometimes the daughter goes out. She has this luggage and I think she attends a day program or something and she comes back after a few days. I have overheard the mother talking to a representative from a center and she said how when her and her daughter are out, the daughter would throw a fit. Like when they were in a store, she said that her daughter stared at the wall and went off. And when a worker was putting things back on the shelf, they said "excuse me" to the daughter and the daughter couldn't understand what was going on, so she had to push her daughter away.

One time, we were all on our way out and we all saw each other. The mother did not introduce me to her daughter and the daughter did not say hello or look at me. The mother was helping her daughter put on her shoes.

I wondered something. Why can't the daughter go out of the room alone or even out of the house by herself? Why doesn't she ever cook or clean? Why does the mother have to lock her inside the room at all times?
