If I quit my job today to backpack part of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) for two-three months (June to August probably, and probably The Yosemite area would be near the middle of the hike), how much would that cost me? I don't actually plan on doing this now, but maybe next year, because I'd like to have some semblance of savings first.
My mental health has been pretty shit lately and I feel like this would be a good idea for me, but I need to know how much to save up.
I have a pack that is in great condition. Also a sleeping pad and a bear can. My boots are in decent condition, but they are 3 years old. They've probably seen less than 100 miles though. I also have a stove and some propane (would probably need to buy more). I also have a couple pairs of comfortable hiking pants.
I would need to buy a tent, sleeping bag, food and food delivery, maps, and some sort of water purification system (I like the UV pens, but I've used iodine before without issues). Then I'd probably need some cheaper stuff like a compass and extra batteries for my cheap flashlight and sunscreen and tp and wet wipes and all of that jazz. I'd probably want to get a new raincoat too. Mine's old. I also probably need a knife for various reasons including that I'd likely be traveling alone.
I am just looking for a ballpark figure, like a couple thousand bucks? Less than that? More? I'd like to go on the cheaper side of things but I'm pretty out of shape, so I'd pay a bit extra to have a light tent and sleeping bag. My biggest unknown is how much food will cost. I see myself eating a lot of oatmeal, mac and cheese with dehydrated chicken, and trail mix.
Another factor that bothers me is that I am a woman and I will definitely menstruate if I'm out for a couple of months, but I just got a menstrual cup so I think that won't be as much of an issue besides cleaning it.
