I'd like to go backpacking with my girlfriend, but neither of us have backpacked before. I've read the advice about picking something short and only overnight for a first time, and found this close to where I live:

https://www.alapark.com/desotoresort/Backcountry Campsites/

There are two "backcountry" campsites, and each one can be reached by a no more than 1 mile hike.

Would this be a good first choice?

My only wariness comes from a macho "geeze, it's only a mile out..." feeling that I'm trying to ignore.

Awesome. If you go, be sure to stop at the visitor center at the top, they're great and have plenty of trail and topo maps that will be really helpful.

Hey,

I'm from Alabama. Have you looked at Cheaha? It a great place with plenty of easy hikes with great views. Desoto is definitely great, but if you're looking for something of an adventure out of town, check it out.
