Post Body

Hey guys,

a friend and i are planning on backpacking the southern states of the US. He has been hitchhiking the US two years ago (we're both from Germany), for me it's the first time there. We're going in August/September-ish, starting in Keyport/NJ (my aunt got a house there), heading south-west to Kentucky, Tennessee (definitely Nashville and Memphis), then south along the Mississippi to New Orleans. Then Alabama -> Georgia -> SC -> NC and along the coast back to Keyport/NJ. We both like to hike and camp outside (got hammocks already) and are looking forward to meet new interesting people. The idea is, to hit the "bigger" cities on the weekends and travel mostly by hitchhiking. I'm aware of the fact that that isn't legal everywhere, but we'll figure something out. Do you think that's doable in 4weeks? Do you have ideas or suggestions where we definitely should go? Any advice's, do's/don'ts?

What part of Alabama are you planning on going through?

If you like beer, go to Birmingham. there are actually a lot of cool micros around there. Check out Avondale, Back Forty, Good People, etc. They all can be found at a place called The J. Clyde in 5 Points. You may even see me there. ha

EDIT: Actually, how would you guys feel about us doing a piece on what it's like for non Americans to backpacking in the US? I run www.packwire.com
