Hey guys,
This is officially my first Reddit post. I'm a huge backpacker with a background in webdesign/digital marketing/PR/etc. I'm at the point in my life where I'm wanting to do something that I actually want to do.
I've been considering starting a backpacking website with blogs/news/gear reviews/videos/etc. for some time now, and I wanted to come to you to see:
What would you, the community, want in a backpacking website? What is most valuable to you when looking at other backpacking websites? What do they not have that you wish they did? I've of course been to just about every other site out there, and I think I could "do it right" as it were. Of course we all think that about some things, but I think I'm actually going to make it happen.
Thanks for any and all feedback. This is something that I'm really hoping will come to fruition, and I want to do it the right way.
Thanks!
World*............Good lord.
I think it's safe to say that we want to have great content for all experiences levels and styles. However, we're not going to spray the site with tons of confusing and hard to navigate content sections right out of the gate.
Well, when it comes to generated revenue, websites are going to have ads. Very little business models online that allow you to go ad free.
One concept is to do pay-wall, "premium" style content. We've considered this, but we're not wanting to go that route at all. We would rather provide a content experience that's the same level of awesome for all users.
I agree.
Currently, we're working on building relationships with bloggers, writers, etc. to make sure that we have awesome content before the site even launches. Any recommendations for folks we need to talk to would be awesome if there are any that anybody suggests.
At this stage, we're also putting together a marketing plan that will focus on building that initial community, of course. When starting a new website, that's of course always the biggest issue when you're first starting out. Thanks for the feedback.
Definitely extremely familiar with Backpacker. IMHO, I would prefer a site to be a little bit less cluttered, if that makes sense. In design, I'm definitely a minimalist, and I think that quality content can be presented in a little bit better/more coherent way. Hence, why I'm considering doing this.
Thanks!
Thanks for the response. We're definitely going to do gear reviews! I've already been in contact with some folks to get samples as well.
Do you think that videos reviews are much better than text photos reviews? We are going to have the capability to do both.
Thanks!
