My son, quite a surprise (autistic loner), expressed an interest in doing a week or more trip with friends on a wilderness trail, backpacking. He's been backpacking before, when he was 10. Didn't know it had stuck with him so well!
I've a decent amount of experience, none recent. Have lots of gear. Skilled hiker, route finder, outdoors person generally. But 70.
So I'm looking for a good 1 or 2 night trip within perhaps 3 hours of N. Virginia. Ideally an out and back, or a loop. I have no idea of his daily range. Not a tremendous amount! Perhaps a camp with car in evening, hike next day overnight, return and drive home. Mainly a test of his motivation, strength, skill, interest.
Suggestions? Any ideas how to prep him, vet his ideas? Things I haven't thought about?
Thanks much!
