Advice on where and how to acquire gear for a a beginner?

I'm new to backpacking and have only been on day hikes. What are your tips/advice on wear to buy gear. I live in a major city so there are stores such as rei in my area. Should I buy online or second hand or in store? And if so where should I go?

I'm looking to buy gear and I don't want to buy budget but I don't need the lightest possible gear either. Somewhere in the middle that doesn't break my wallet and that is good quality but doesn't have to be the best quality.
