This morning I was delighted to find that I received a monthly update from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust following the first donation I've ever made to an elephant rescue and conservation effort. In this update I learned that Rorogoi, the orphaned elephant that I sponsored, is doing quite well, and that the money I donated to them alongside other individuals on this subreddit is going towards great work such as saving their new rescue, Mbegu.
The work that this organization does goes well beyond raising orphaned elephants - from rescuing other animals such as this baby Suni and orphaned rhinos like Maalim to running a mobile veterinary unit that treats wounded animals in the wild, I've found that my donation has a larger impact than solely fostering a single cute baby elephant.
While my experiences are with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, there are numerous wonderful charities worthy of our donations. Check out this update about this subreddit's wonderful donation efforts for a list of organizations that have received our donations. If you haven't given, please consider giving to help these amazing creatures and to foster a more understanding culture for these little babies!
I also never thought that I would ever write a PBS-esque donation drive opinion on Reddit.
