Hey guys! I want to write some real chapter questions this week so I'm going to need a day to re-read. I'll post them either this evening or some time tomorrow. So sorry about the delay.
Your comments have been so thoughtful and amazing. Thanks so much for going on this journey with me! Can't believe we'll be done with book 1 next week!
Edit: Please don't wait for my questions! Feel free to discuss to your hearts content!
Edit 2: Thank you for your patience! Here are the questions as promised!
Chapter 10
Casaubon has had years of going through the motions and is described as putting all of his faith of impending and pent-up delight into marriage. How unfair to Dorothea! How might the ramifications of his inevitable disappointment manifest?
So many new potential suitors afoot! The honeymoon is destined for Rome. Might they run in to Will the artist? And among the many new characters introduced at the party we meet Mr. Lydgate the surgeon. Also, James spent all of chapter 9 trying to coax Cadwallader to speak to Mr. Brooke and ask him to defer the wedding. So he's still in the race even if there's talk of him switching to Celia. If Dorothea really hates Casaubon within a year as the gossips predict, is there a chance she runs off with a new love interest? And if so, which one?
Chapter 11
In this chapter we're introduced to the Vincy family and most namely Rosamond Vincy - the potential object of Lydgate's affections and Mr. Vincy - the alderman about to be mayor. Why do you think this chapter was included in Miss Brooke's Book (the title of Book 1)? Is it just timing to foreshadow the Lydgate/Rosy love story and the coming election or might there be a personal connection to Dorothea?
Eliot puts in a very interesting dialogue between Rosy and her brother Fred. They discuss slang and what is means to be disagreeable and squabble as siblings do. (Side note - Fred is clearly interested in Mary Garth). Fred even manipulates her into letting him play the flute so as to take her on a horseback ride to Stone Court presumably so that Rosy can meet Lydgate. Since it appears Rosy and Lydgate's affections are equal is it safe to say that their meeting will be a meet-cute of the romantic comedy variety? Nothing can be that easy, right? What could go wrong?
