To me, "awakened" refers to a certain type of awareness and acceptance that no one knows exactly what we are or what is going on, but there is definitely something bigger than we're led to believe. Some people like to describe it through supernatural means, while others like to explain the garden in terms of the garden, turning to aliens or elaborate conspiracies to encapsulate what's going on across our strange, miraculous planet.
This awakened state is not binary, meaning that while certain events can bring you closer to being awake than you previously were, there is no end state; we're perpetually waking up to new possibilities and relearning about ourselves and the universe over and over again. What you knew today might be untrue tomorrow, so the wise prefer to say that they know nothing, but our understanding of ourselves and the universe is perpetually improving itself each moment of everyday.
The acceptance of always being on an eternal journey grants a form of serenity and peace in oneself, which radiates outwards as kindness and compassion. On a long enough timeline, a person who is awakened will erode facets of the self to become like water and will always adapt to the circumstances that they find themselves in. And, in setting down their desires to be any one way, the awakened become the servants of God, or Mother Gaia, or humanity, or however you want to phrase the fact that you live for others when you are truly awakened.
