How do you get experience in the field?

Hey guys, in a week from now I will have my intro flight lesson in hopes of pursuing a commercial license.
When it comes to getting a job how does the process work? For instance a business student may do internships unpaid or paid in the field before graduation then receive a job after, with aviation how does the hiring process normally work? Is it a cut throat field?
