Key Phob broken cant find the brain of it don't have spare

Today I went to start my RX 350 2009 and noticed that the key fob had split and the three buttons were gone from the plastic case.. Then I couldn't start my car. Called AAA thinking it was battery. Then had it towed to a local mechanic. He is stating I need a new "Brain" for the key. I then tried calling lexus dealership and they stated it would cost $1200. Is this true is there anyway to get it cheaper. I don't need the whob I just want to start my car. Looking to get 5-7k more miles and not willing to spend that much

What is the process? are they ripping me ogg?
