Scientifically speaking, WHY do autistic people struggle with social cues?

Everything I read say that people with autism have trouble with social cues, and struggle, variably, with things like tone, body language, and reading facial expressions. But I was surprised that I couldn't find anything at all theorizing WHAT causes people with autism to struggle in this way, or any research trying to answer that question. *

Does anyone know of any research on this? Or have theories as to why this is the case? Or a theory as to why there isn't any research? Is it because it's more of a syndrome than one thing, causally?

Thanks for any help.

*I was comparing in my head to something like ADHD for example. People with ADHD may also have trouble reading social cues, and the answer to WHY would be something like (in my understanding); ADHD people have low dopamine levels in their brains, much of social interaction isn't urgent or interesting enough to pay attention to, failing to pay attention to it means you don't learn to read them, ergo that is why people with ADHD sometimes aren't good at reading social cues. But what's the WHY theory for autism? Tx
