Is there a correlation between being an autistic and a stereotypical 80s nerd
Post Body

This is just a thought I had, so I thought I'd look into it and get some research done. I found this reddit post which kinda answers what I'm talking about.

https://www.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/7b44ar/nerd_geek_aspie_a_rose_by_any_other_name_is/

But it was posted on another subreddit so I thought I'd post it here.

The mental theory I'm exploring is that many of the autistics usually have trouble with i.e social cues, dressing unfashionably (due to clothing that doesn't feel comfortable to touch), often speaking in a logical fact spitting manner, missing subtleties, and in some cases and increased IQ.

Considering there was research about autism done in the past in the 20th century, the stereotype of a nerd was very specific. Someone who's into sci-fi or tech related things (many of which are now considered mainstream) a deep knowledge of interest (which could be considered normal if said interest is shared by others), physical difficulties, trouble with social cues, spitting out random facts. Some of these traits are now considered autistic but back then they would be referred to as 'nerd' used in the 80s context.

But my research has seen both arguments in favor and against this theory by other autist. I tried looking up on this subreddit to find anything but I ultimately didn't find a thread that has this discussion, so I'm starting one now.

So what do you guys think?
