There is a long-term benefit here, it's better to have France on good business terms with us. Politically they aren't idiots, they understand that the government of the day isn't necessarily a reflection of the country as a whole - just look at the US under the Trump era compared to now. That's not to say that there aren't still branches to be mended but this goes a long way towards restoring confidence and standing between the two countries and will ultimately lead to long-term benefits with trade deals and other ventures able to move forward again with real confidence. At the end of the day this is an investment in the future by correcting the bastardry of the past.
