Kind of pointless of them isn't it? I mean if anything they find using this info becomes immediately inadmissible as evidence then they are only shooting themselves in the foot by accessing it in the first place.

True, but that's not using the information to directly incriminate someone in a court of law. If they did it would be thrown out in court and only hurt the investigation they are trying to conduct, they still need to rely on conventional investigation and evidence approaches to build their case.
