Looking for unique places to take my boyfriend for his 23rd birthday

We'll be staying close to downtown for a weekend (fri-sun) in October. What restaurants/bars do you all recommend? He's super into live music (specifically jazz) and we love a good happy hour. We also are looking to have some quality meals and maybe even some outdoor time (hiking?). We are not picky with food we love all sorts of cuisines. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. There is the obvious east 6th street and Rainey street but I want to find something more personal and different.
