Why do higher tier energy weapons have such incredible ranges (I can make a 4.26 million km laser at the moment and I'm nowhere near the end of laser techs) when the absolute 100% end game best range you can get with an energy weapon fire control is 50% hit chance at 700k km and ~0% chance at 1.4 million km?
I guess it sort of makes sense for lasers since they have damage attenuation over their range, so higher max range means higher damage at the effective range. But literally every beam weapon except particle beams can fire farther than the best fire control can see at high (or not so high) tech levels.
It really makes some of the energy weapon techs pretty useless. For meson cannons, as an example, you can go past your maximum range with a combination of either 30cm * 12 focus or 80 cm * 2 focus. Going all the way up both sides is a real waste, and since larger caliber weapons are bigger and require more power and crew while higher focus just increases the cost to make them (which caliber also does), it seems like getting to 30cm and ignoring it for the rest of time is the best move. All the other energy weapons have similar problems.
