dynamics vs condensers in untreated room with possible background noise
Post Body

Hey, looking at getting a mic & interface on a budget (like $300 Australian) to record rap vocals.

Mics: Currently split between a shure sm58 ($169) or an at2020 ($130) / similarly priced condenser (Rode NT1 or MXL990, etc).

Interface: Foscurite solo 3 ($160), open to suggestions of similarly priced ones. I'm worried this won't have enough gain for the sm58. I can't afford a cloudlifter, but i'll get one of the cheaper ones

The condenser vs dynamic for rap vocals at home seems like an endless debate and i've researched forever and can't decide what'd be best. Some people swear by dynamics and others say condensers are fine at home. Does anybody here get decent results from an sm58 with a cheap interface?

And does anybody here get decent results using a condenser at home with make shift treatment? I've already mixed a few of my tracks myself, I have good plugins and am willing to watch endless tutorials & learn, but how much room noise can be edited out? Is a condenser going to cause more headaches than it's worth?

I'm not sure of what my living situation will be next yr, it will be with housemates but not sure where, it could be a noisy area. For context, I'm about to move out of my place that's right next to the train & main rd and there's no way a condenser wouldn't pick up the endless noise. I don't know if I'm going to be able to rent in a super quiet area, so I'm wondering if anybody in a similar situation uses a condenser?

I don't have room treatment and can't afford it rn other than just using makeshift blankets n shit. I also use ableton on a 2015 MacBook pro that often has fan noise & i'm cautious the condenser will pick up it up.

In terms of my voice, I'd say it's dark, but not totally sure, I can provide examples of my tracks. I've recorded on my friends sm7b (they're like $700 here), but I'm not sure whether I like the sound of it sometimes, but I also don't know any better and haven't tried anything else (it could just be my voice/delivery/mixing). It feels like it's sometimes lacking detail, and that's why i'm considering condensers. I also don't want to have to rap superloud all the time, as i'd like to be able to make slower, low-key stuff so I don't know whether the sm58 would be good. The sound i'm going for is a somewhat raw vocal over jazzy/atmospheric beats.

TLDR: Trying to decide which would be less of a headache for home recording; the gain issues and possible lack of detail I might get with the shure sm58, or the possible room / outside noise i'd get with a condenser like the rode nt1/at-2020//mxl990
