What kind of open-source VST should I build?

I have a lot of experience in DSP but I've never written a VST before. I want to give it a try. I'm sure my first couple will be throwaway projects, but I would love to build a high-quality, open-source VST.
My question to the community is: what VST would be most valuable to build? What are there no good free alternatives for?
