As a programmer first, and audio hobbyist distant second, it seems to me that for a basic effect (say, "compressor"), a "perfect" compressor done in software would basically be programming a textbook equation or three. The fact that there's tons out there makes me think this even more: maybe it's a basic first project for anyone learning VST programming.
So, ELIamA programmer, and leaving UI aside, what's the basic things going on under the hood that make some great vs. good vs. bad, etc.? Or are they all basically the same (for a given effect)?
