Creative Ways of Parallel Distorting?

Anybody here big on paralell distortion?? Sometimes, I like to use a parallel channel distorted, which I blend in accordingly for whenever I want something to cut (standard technique). I have a few distortion plugins (temper, contrast distortion) that I rely on, but sometimes, when distorting in parallel, phase problems can occur. And I'm not a super phase freak, so if it bothers me, then yeah... The other day I came across a video of a guy using the "dr alien dirth box" https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoBMNRsxCGeZXvtrNO7CGJso5yAmb2GcM on drums and I got to thinking it might be pretty cool to distort stuff through an actual hardware component rather than a plugin. Would going through an actual unit mitigate phase problems or would that not really matter? Anybody doing any cool parallel distortion stuff??

Thanks.
