Looking for a few Audio dramas to listen to at work
Post Body

Posted here a few months ago with some success, so I thought I'd give it another go. I got into Audio dramas last year, and given my job, I spend 8 hours a day going through what I have on hand so I run through shows fairly quickly. I tend to stick to Horror, but the occasional Sci-fi will make it onto my list. I will say that I listen strictly on Spotify, and while I'll quickly and happily sub to a shows Patreon to support the creators, and do donate to most of the shows listed, the Patreon platform altogether isn't my bag, so I'll wait for public release before listening to new episodes.

If I had to make a top 10 list to date, it would be

  1. Silt Verses
  2. Old Gods of Appalachia
  3. I am in Eskew
  4. McGillicuddy and Murder's Pawn Shop
  5. Neighborly
  6. Malevolent
  7. Wake of Corrosion
  8. A Voice from Darkness
  9. The Program
  10. Hello from the Hallow woods

Others that I've listened to and possibly enjoyed: We Weren't Supposed to Know, Copperheart, Midnight Burger, White Vault, The Strata, Don't Mind Cruxmont, The Oyster, Embers of Eden. I feel like there are others I've finished and aren't coming to mind right now. Currently finishing up Dead Letter Office of Somewhere, Ohio.

One major thing that I've noticed that I can no longer tolerate is a ton of pre show or post show fluff. Working with my hands, I can't run to my phone every episode to skip to the next episode or jump passed ads, so on a I'll use Magnus Archive as an example. It has 200 episodes, and I've listened to each and every one. Great story, really enjoyed it. But the podcast as a whole wasn't a fit for me. An average episode lasted around 30 minutes. The first two minutes are ads, Rusty Quill and ACast intros, another 30 seconds pushing out the Kickstarter for the upcoming show, Minute long intro song, then the episode plays 4 1/2 minutes after it actually started playing. Then Outro, cast credits, pimping the Patreon, occasional reading Patreon donor list, then another ad or two. A solid third of my listening for the show is Fluff. They had ads on 6 minute episodes saying there was going to be a small break in between seasons. I've noticed this is a growing trend with every show Rusty Quill picks up, and makes me hesitant to start any more of their shows (Hell, even Old Gods had ads on their last episode now that they're an official RQ show, and that hasn't been a thing since I started following them in Season 1) Compare that to "We Weren't Supposed to Know" where you hit play and the episode starts. No intros, no credits, no ads, no opening theme. Just story. Story ends, episode ends. First season of Dead Letter Office was the same thing. All show, no Fluff. McGillicuddy and Murder had 5 full and fantastic seasons without a single ad.

Sorry for the rant, that got away from me, but it does get the point across. I would love a couple new Audio dramas, but I am a bit picky about what I'm subbing to. Really looking for more Horror types, but a good Sci-fi works. Last time I was given a ton of Fantasy and comedy, and I can safety say those aren't my genres for Audio Drama. I do enjoy storyline more then just unconnected short stories, but short stories that connect to a larger story (A Voice from Darkness, Magnus Archives, Neighborly) work well for me to.
