Just on the final book of the Wheel of Time series - 14 books each over 35 hrs long and some well into the 40s. Started over 2 years ago after the TV series started - have been listening to podcasts and other audiobooks as well and you do need the breaks after each book..
Slightly mixed feelings - start with the downsides. As might be obvious from the lengths the pace is often very slow and it's taken so long I can't remember half of what went on early in the series, I can see why major Sci Fi nuts love it as it's a very detailed and immersive world but a better editor would surely have made Jordan speed it up a bit. There was one point during what was supposed to be a thrilling moment when there was what seemed like 10 mins of detailed description thrown in that had me almost shouting at the narrator to get on with it. Also Jordan doesn't seem to have heard of the word "vomit" - people "sick up"; small but personal gripe.
The narration is generally good - the author hasn't helped the narrators by having a lot of quite similar names which makes working out who's speaking or involved at the start of a chapter and other places tricky. I started with Rosamund Pike's reading of the first book - excellent. She's done the second but not sure if she's doing them all. All other books done by the reliable pair of Kramer (male POV) and Reading (female) - good rather than excellent.
The editing doesn't help at times - there's often no more pause between chapters than between sentences, which if you're not listening with full attention can be confusing and when something is this long who can give full attention.
On the plus side - it's a very good story, good enough that despite the above I've never considered giving up. In many ways its strengths are also its weaknesses in terms of detail etc.
I'm glad I've listened to it but somehow I don't think I'll be revisiting it unlike many other series that return to on a regular basis. It's just too long
