Right now I'm using a hand-me-down system of a Sansui A-5 integrated amp and Fisher STV-420 speakers to listen to my collection of mostly rock/speed metal, Techno, and classical (some Jazz and fusion). It's bargain basement stuff from the 80's (I love the looks, but the sound isn't very impressive), so I'm looking to upgrade.
I'm big on fast response, clarity, and focused and tight bass rather than booming. I'm looking to spend about $1k overall, less is more of course. I'd like to have a good headphone stage as well, to drive Hifiman HE400i and similar phones.
The MMGs really interest me, and at $600 they seem by all accounts to be fantastic speakers, but hard to drive. It seems big SS amps or very specific tubes (which are usually too expensive for me) are recommended.
I planned on getting an Adcom GFA-555 ($250-300 used) to drive them, which should be plenty of power, but that leaves little room for a pre or receiver as it's not integrated. Would the NAD 3020 do the MMGs justice? I've also heard good things about the Rotel RB-971 used with them. I'm in love with the old 70s-80s integrated look as well, and if I could find something decent there I'd be ecstatic.
I listen in a fairly small room that I can treat if needed.
