missing Graphic EQ sliders on 3.1.3, Ubuntu

I am newly returned to Audacity after several years. Using the 3.1.3 appimage on Ubuntu (same issue on both 22.04 and 21.10), when I open the Graphic EQ effect, the box opens, but there are no sliders.

I've searched online and have only found one other report of this issue, [another post on this sub with no replies](np.reddit.com/r/audacity/comments/u01w7x/missing_options/) from /u/bvdp

Has anyone else encountered this? Is it related to the known issues or incorrectly built packages mentioned on the listed on the release page?
