Recurring timed-record sessions in Audacity?

I have a microphone that I'm using to record wildlife sounds. I could record one long stint in the field in one file, but then if there are any issues, the whole file would be lost.
I would prefer to record in blocks of half an hour (ok to leave a small gap when Audacity can export the wav file and rest a bit before launching a new Timed Recording).
This has been a popular request in the feature request forum so I figure somebody has got a workaround going. What are my options?
