I'm just reading E. O. Wilson for the first time and his analysis of the origins of religions.
I was fascinated to learn that the idea of a high God in the male form, moral, jealous, judging is actually not that widespread (from anthropological studies) and actually correlated with pastoral (i.e.herding animals) societies.
Pastoral societies tend to be highly mobile, tightly organised, often militant, often belligerent towards other groups and predisposed to male authority.
So all three of the major religions from the middle East literally view themselves as sheep.
