I posted this about 2 hours ago to (r/exmormon), and I think it was misinterpreted. I'll post it as-is, and add some edits at the end. I do apologize for any formatting errors. Here goes:
Earlier today, I had a thought that got a little carried away, and creeped me out. I think I created a bit of a rabbit hole...
I was thinking about the stories about Jesus dying for our sins. All of the âI did this for youâ nonsense. People preaching about:
âHis love for us was so great,â
âGod sacrificed his only son,â
âHe did this because he loves us/youâ
...yada yada yada. Then I thought, âYeah, well I never asked you to do that. No one did, really. This was not my idea, and I donât like it. Itâs pretty assumptive, and it doesnât make you any better. Itâs not something I wanted, and I donât feel like I need to appreciate a gesture as self-righteous as that when youâre basically doing it without my wanting/needing it to be done.â My thoughts continued in this line for a few minutes, just knocking it around.
And thatâs when my thoughts went a little sidewaysâŚ
Could there be a modern, cultural connection between this and stalkers/abusers that say things like, I did this for you!â when they try to explain away their dangerous or delusional actions? Try to validate why they killed or hurt your family/SO/friend that they felt was getting in their way? Is it possible that because of the teachings that âJesus did this for us - we should be gratefulâ these people do horrible things and expect their victim to be ok with it?
So, yeah. Rabbit hole. Could this be a real thing?
Edit For clarity, I'm really curious if there could be a correlation between the "I did this for you" stories regarding Jesus dying for our sins, and the "I did this for you" mindset of stalkers/abusers who try to justify their dangerous actions.
Edit: If I shared this the wrong way, I am sorry. I'm still learning, and proper formatting is getting the better of me so far. Please point me in the direction of amending my ignorance-I would greatly appreciate it.
