An imaginary conversation.
Me: what about all that bad stuff in the Bible? Slavery? Women as property? Rape? Genocide?
Theist. You’re taking that all out of context. We ignore things from the Bible all the time, because they were written for a different era. For instance we don’t condemn eating shellfish anymore, and we all wear mixed fabrics. We can’t stone you to death anymore. We don't dislike those proscribed things now. God understands we can’t take his word literally to the letter all the time.
Me: What about sexual relations between two men?
Theist: The Bible is crystal clear! That is an abomination and can’t be tolerated in society!!
Me: isn’t that taking it out of context?
Theist. Well. . .we just don’t like that.
