How do you deal with the idea of death?

Without religion and the concept of the afterlife, how do you cope with the fact that, one day, all your loved ones and yourself will die? What gives you strength and meaning to continue living in spite of it possibly being all for naught?
I understand we came into existence and were previously "not there", so perhaps reverting to that state may not be painful. But pretending it's never going to happen doesn't work.
