What are the games leading up to?

First off I have not played any of the AC games. But I did watch my older brother play 1-4 when I was younger so I have the gist of the story for only those games.
So my question what is the end game for the games after 4 has been leading up to? A big final battle? Or is just self-contained stories so they're able to pump out more games with some connections/easter eggs to older/newer games?
P.s. AC3 America the Beautiful commercial was cool
