The cons of "masking" your autism?

Post Body

In the last couple of years I have done INTENSE research on social skills, charisma and body language, you could say it became a special interest. I did begin to follow many of the things that I learned and became really good at hiding my autism even though it was not intentional. Ever since I have become better in this area people tend to overlook my other issues that come with autism and don't take them as serious. I'm not a believer in expecting others to give me special treatment (especially if they are not aware that I have any disorders ), but when people I am really close to, including family, make decisions that know will effect me in a bad way, don't give importance to things that I mention bother me and tell me to get over it, or even flat out tell me that they forgot that I even had autism it can feel really upsetting.

Is all this "masking" even worth it when I consider all the cons that come with it?

Have any of y'all experienced something similar?
