I'm (unfortunately) looking for new work. I'm trying to be very aware of a company's work culture and how they handle people from diverse backgrounds and abilities. In my last position, I was fortunate to stumble upon a company and manager who was good, but I've heard some real horror stories. For example, an autistic friend was let go at the end of the probation period because they didn't "click" with the rest of the team.
One position I was looking at was with a major corporation. Of course, they had a standard "Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer" statement at the end of their posting. When I kept reading their site, they had a section on "Tips for your interview," and one of the points was
Body languageΒ is as important now, if not more.
It instantly seemed like a red flag to me that they may not be as aware and accepting of a neurodiverse person as they should be. I have 10 years of experience, plenty of examples of the work I did, and plenty of references to back up my experience. That should speak for itself, not rely on how well my body language appears in an hour-long interview.
I wouldn't consider it a red flag, maybe a yellow one. A lot of folks just don't think about autistic people when writing that kind of stuff or when they do think about autistic people, think that they are doing us a favor as if symptoms of autism have an off switch.
And a lot of people hire based on gut feelings and whether or not they like the person rather than their qualifications, which sucks.
But, it is what it is. You have to weigh that with how much you need the job. If it comes down to accepting a little intolerance to keep from experiencing homelessness, then I'll mask and bear it. It is a job-- not my identity or my life.n
