Do You Use Euphemisms?

I have found that especially with emotional or hard topics I tend to make jokes or use a phrase to get the point, but it is half and half that is goes over someone's head. Even when I joked the other day about going outside to flip a cardboard sign instead of my normal job it went over my supervisors head.It seems like maybe euphemisms are more common the older you get?
