(Spoilers All) What was the true deal with Shae?

I am just over halfway through AFFC and I am up to date on the TV show and I feel like I may have missed something about Shae's intentions. It seemed that she truly did love Tyrion yet she turned on him so easily at his trial. Was it ever explained how/why she flipped on him or are just to assume that Tywin or Cersei paid her off? Or was she part of a long con used by Tywin/Cersei to setup Tyrion later on?
