I started with the show, but I've been reading the novels as well (now into ASOS). One thing that I've always wondered is how do maesters (or whomever) track the passage of years vs seasons. Seasons have irregular lengths in ASOIAF, but it's implied that there are regular years that can be tracked.
How are years tracked? The obvious answer would be that the passage of time is determined by the movement of the stars. So, a year wouldn't be determined by the sequence of seasons, but rather the constellations in the night sky. But then how do the maesters determine that summer has concluded?
